La reconnaissance internationale est généralement discutée du point de vue du droit international et en mettant l'accent sur l'histoire contemporaine. En revanche, ce volume privilegie une perspective à long terme de plus de 2 000 ans d'histoire européenne et globale et étudie la reconnaissance en mettant l'accent sur sa dimension politique.
