As President Trump has discovered recently with its changes in procedures for admitting refugees, the anti-immigrant rhetoric that got him elected has not been easy to implement. He will face another challenge when he attempts to finish building the barrier along the border with Mexico and attempts to deport millions of persons in unauthorized status. One political issue to pay close attention to in the months ahead will be whether he rescinds the deferred action (DACA) status that President Obama gave to about one million undocumented young people known as “Dreamers” who arrived as children, grown up in the United States, have had little or no contact with Mexico, have enrolled in higher education, and have advocated for legalization. Although he has the authority to deport them, this presentation will discuss the history that brought us to this point, the enormous challenges that both the Trump administration and the Dreamers are likely to face, and what its resolution may mean for the future of U.S. immigration policy.

Professor García y Griego is a visiting professor at UGA, UFR LE, ILCEA4.
He holds a faculty position in the Departments of History and Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque). He has taught at El Colegio de México and at the University of California, Irvine and has written extensively on international migration to the United States and U.S. - Mexican relations. His undergraduate degree is from Princeton University and his doctorate from UCLA. His presentation will be in English with a PowerPoint in Spanish.
