Voyageurs européens en Europe, perception(s), confrontation(s), représentation(s). 1600-1840

Cette première journée d’étude cherche avant tout à rendre compte de la diversité et de la complexité des pratiques et des expériences du voyage en Europe entre le début du XVIIe siècle et le milieu du XIXe siècle. Il s’agit, en effet, de prêter attention à des catégories de voyageurs (artistes, marchands, domestiques…) et à des itinéraires (en « terre classique », mais aussi en Italie du Sud, en Grèce, en Europe du Nord…) qui transcendent la notion de « Grant Tour » ; les avancées historiographiques des 25 dernières années ont, en effet, montré combien ce modèle ne saurait résumer les réalités du voyage à l’époque moderne. C’est donc un regard large, sur le plan chronologique comme sur le plan spatial, qui sera porté sur les pratiques de voyage et les traces qu’elles ont laissées.

Dans un esprit interdisciplinaire, les contributions chercheront à montrer combien l’expérience de l’altérité contribue à la construction – voire à la déconstruction – des identités (de genre, sociale, nationale ou supranationale…) dans l’Europe moderne.

Les propositions de communications en français ou en anglais (200-250 mots) accompagnées d’un titre et d’une courte notice biographique (100 mots) devront être envoyées avant le 15 janvier 2023 aux trois organisateurs de la journée d’étude :

This one-day symposium, which will take place at Grenoble Alpes University on 26 May 2023, is part of a series of scientific events organised by the research centres Pléiade (Université Sorbonne Paris Nord), ILCEA4 (Université Grenoble Alpes) and LUHCIE (Université Grenoble Alpes) and is part of the “Sociability and Travel” research programme of the GIS Sociability.

This first symposium seeks above all to reflect upon the diversity and complexity of the practices and experiences of European travellers in Europe between the beginning of the 17th century and the middle of the 19th century. We expect the contributors to pay attention to categories of travellers (artists, merchants, servants, etc.) and to itineraries (in "classical lands", but also in southern Italy, Greece, northern Europe, …) in order to transcend the notion of “Grand Tour”. Indeed, the historiographical research of the last 25 years has shown how this model cannot sum up the realities of travel in modern times. With a broad chronological and spatial frame, this call for papers aims at gathering contributors to discuss and bring new perspectives on travel practices and their impact on the societies involved.

With an interdisciplinary approach, the contributions will seek to show how much the experience of otherness contributes to the construction – even to the deconstruction – of identities (gender, social, national or supranational, etc.) in modern Europe.
