EVELANG

My talk explores the paralinguistic element of pitch as constitutive of professional identities based on an analysis of the use of voice by a Hollywood voice artist acting out various professional identities. When examining the use of spoken language and identity, it is common to attempt to map different linguistic variables to a certain social identity, such as gender, race and class, and linguistic identity too. These studies tend to focus on linguistic variables, for example a phoneme or intonation. My talk focuses on the paralinguistic element of pitch based on audio data analyzed using the software program Praat available online.

Building on research related to indexical field, stance and positioning, I aim to explore how paralingistic pitch is related to emotion and stancetaking for professional identity, in particular a medical doctor, airline pilot, university lecturer and call center employee.  I argue that pitch creates an emotional and attitudinal stance towards the interpersonal interaction and the speaker’s attitude towards the content of the spoken discourse. For a professional identity, the use of paralinguistic aspects of language use, such as pitch, is a significant resource for effective and appropriate communication for sounding professional.

In addition to exploring the connection between language use and professional identity, I reflect on my objective of acquiring knowledge and experience using and analyzing sound recordings as a valuable skill for linguistic studies, especially spoken discourse. My talk also covers some discussion on authenticity of data, using sound recording and the case for voice for studying spoken discourse and its relation to register.
